Award for Dissertations on Migration and Ethnic Minorities

The Section on Migration and Ethnic Minorities in the German Sociological Association gives awards for dissertations that make an innovative and outstanding contribution to migration sociology from a theoretical, empirical and/or methodological perspective. The aim is to promote young scholars in this field.

Next award ceremony in spring 2027

The award is given every two years. The next award will be presented at the Section’s spring meeting in 2027. The awardee is selected by the Section’s Executive Committee. The prize money is 500 euros.

Nomination of dissertations

Dissertations may be nominated by a member of the Section or submitted by the authors themselves. Admissible are dissertations in German or English which have been defended at a German or foreign university within the two years previous to the submission deadline.

Deadline for submission: October 31, 2026

The following documents should be sent by email in pdf format to the address of the section (sektionmuem@gmx.de):

• One copy of the thesis
• Doctoral certificate (Zeugnis) or doctoral degree certificate (Urkunde). If applicable, provisional certificate of successful completion of the oral examination prior to publication.
• At least one review (usually the first review of the doctoral supervisor, but other reviews are acceptable)
• Curriculum vitae in table form
• Brief statement of why the thesis represents an innovative and outstanding contribution to migration research (max. 1 page)
