Africa and the World: Citizens’ Views in an Age of Fragmentation

African citizens want more trade, more global engagement, and a stronger voice in institutions such as the UN – but they are split on migration and demand accountability on climate change. Afrobarometer CEO Joe Asunka shares new findings from Round 10 of Africa’s largest public opinion survey.

Afrobarometer’s third flagship report reveals a striking finding: African publics do not perceive today’s great-power rivalry as a zero-sum contest. Citizens who view China favourably are just as likely to view the United States positively – a pattern that reflects a deliberate strategic choice, not indecision. Amid slipping US and Russian approval ratings and steady enthusiasm for China, African publics are also demanding more seats at the table: 71 per cent want their countries to have greater influence in bodies such as the UN Security Council. Drawing on Round 10 survey data from 38 countries, the report challenges Western assumptions about alignment in an increasingly multipolar world.
