A Critical Alliance: The UN Charter and the Nuremberg Principles - Peace and Security in a Fragmented World

07. - 09. Oktober 2026
Organisator: International Nuremberg Principles Academy
Veranstaltungsort: Hybrid-Veranstaltung, Online, Justizpalast Nürnberg

From 7 to 9 October 2026, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy is organising the Nuremberg Form 2026, held at the historic Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice, the historic venue of the Nuremberg trials.

Eight decades after the judgment of the International Military Tribunal and the establishment of the United Nations (UN), their spirit and letter are facing severe threats. The world is witnessing repeated violations of the Charter´s prohibition on the use of force in various regions of the world. The gradual erosion of these fundamental norms has led to the highest number of conflicts recorded since the UN´s foundation, and a significant proliferation of international crimes. These harrowing circumstances are exacerbating the failure of the preventive function envisaged in the Charter, and they call into question the effectiveness and the sustainability of the international legal order that was developed in response to the horrors of World War II.

This international and interdisciplinary conference will discuss the current state and future needs of international, regional and domestic systems to hold individuals accountable for the crime of aggression and other international crimes. In relation to the UN Charter´s stated objective to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war,“ the Nuremberg Forum 2026 will assess the best approaches to strengthen institutional and normative frameworks designed to prevent the unlawful use or threat of force. It will analyse how the international criminal justice system can adapt in order to enforce these norms in an era characterised by fragmentation, multipolarity, democratic backsliding as well as hybrid and asymmetrical warfare. The panellists will consider the roles and perspectives of a plurality of stakeholders including survivor communities, civil society, the UN, as well as international, regional and domestic courts in furthering justice, prevention, and reparations to facilitate a sustainable and just peace. Find further information on the panel compositions and themes here.

The International Nuremberg Principles Academy is a foundation dedicated to the advancement of international criminal law and related human rights. The Nuremberg Forum, the Academy's annual flagship conference, provides a unique opportunity to meet leading international scholars, practitioners, policy makers and members of civil society, to engage in critical discussion on topical issues most pertinent to furthering accountability for international crimes.

The Nuremberg Forum 2026 is open to all public free of charge and will be conducted in a hybrid format. To attend the conference, whether in person or online, please register
