Andrei S. Markovits

Born in the West Romanian city of Timișoara to Hungarian-speaking middle class Jews, Markovits attended secondary school in Vienna before embarking on his university education at Columbia University where he obtained five degrees. His 50-year professorial career led him to academic posts at the finest universities in the United States as well as visiting professorships at universities in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Israel. His published work which has appeared in 18 languages has focused on German labor unions, social democracy, new social movements and the Greens; as well as on European anti-Americanism and antisemitism. In addition to these topics, Markovits has also produced books and articles on various aspects of comparative sports on both sides of the Atlantic with special emphasis on Association Football.
